During the holidays, sixteen students and four staff members embarked on a journey to one of the most popular cities in the world – New York.

During our time abroad, students visited numerous iconic sights such as The Empire State Building, Central Park and Madame Tussauds. As a group we also watched The New York Knicks play a game at Madison Square Gardens which was an amazing experience in itself.

Some of the highlights in the HASS aspect of the tour were the 9/11 Memorial, The Statue Of Liberty, United Nations and The Natural History Museum.

For most students it was not only their first time seeing a Broadway production, but their first ever theatrical show. The students thoroughly enjoyed Aladdin, Blue Man Group, Cirque Du Soleil Paramour and Cats. Our backstage tour of the Amsterdam theatre was eye-opening in terms of their mechanical sets, 60 second time-frames for costume changes and the intricate detail put into every aspect of the theatre. We were also introduced to the many secrets of the stage, such as how the Genie in Aladdin appears, how they got Mary Poppins to fly, have a costume change and transport back to the stage within 30 seconds.

The students ate their way through New York eating $1 a slice pizza most days, fried chicken and waffles, Shake Shack burgers and a lunch at the iconic Hard Rock Café. We also celebrated Lillian’s 17th birthday abroad, having an Oreo cake in our apartment after a delicious meal cooked by Mr Wolmarans.

On our final day we travelled to the picturesque Washington DC. Although we didn’t get to see US President Donald Trump up-close we did visit his home, The White House. Furthermore, we visited numerous historical sites such as The Lincoln Memorial, The WWII Memorial, The Air and Space Museum and The Korean War Memorial.

We were very blessed to be given this opportunity. The trip was a huge success and enjoyed by everyone who attended.
