CATHOLIC EDUCATION CARNIVALE

Each year Catholic Education displays the variety of schooling opportunities it offers to students throughout the State, at the Forrest Place Carnivale.

During the day many dynamic and visually stimulting displays are set up, combined with performances by Primary and Secondary students from many Catholic schools.

The Carnival was held on Thursday 13 October and forty Aranmore students represented the College in the Official Opening Ceremony. Our students proudly carried the flags of the many nations represented at Aranmore and were led in by the Trinity College Pipes and Drums. It was a great opportunity for our students to be involved in this public event in the city.

Congratulations to all our students who represented us so well.

LITURGY IN THE PARK

One of Aranmore's rituals for the Year Twelves as they prepare to leave school and enter the 'real world' is the Liturgy in the Park, a wonderful time to reflect and celebrate. After breakfast and a bit of fun on the 'child's play' equipment in Kings Park, the whole Year Twelve body hold a liturgy to acknowledge the blessing that is their year group. Afterwards the students and staff celebrate the joys of their friendships with fabulous face painting. As one of the girls said afterwards "that was such an awesome way to remember our year group. I will never forget it."

ONSITE: BUILDING DREAMS

(ONSITE Coordinator Paul Baker, HIA Business Manager/
Apprenticeships David Endersby, Min. for Education
Hon Liljana Ravlich and Aranmore Principal Jim Elliott)

This year the Onsite group, consisting of the following Colleges: Aranmore, Chisholm, La Salle, Newman, Perth, Prendiville and Trinity, formed a partnership with the Housing Industry Association to implement an innovative program entitled 'The Dream Factory'.

The Dream Factory project will enable students to be engaged in any occupation within the housing industry, e.g. bricklaying, carpentry, tiling, plastering, etc. As students progress to Year 12 Graduation, they will gain a Certificate 1 or 2 in Building & Construction. On Graduation, they would move into employment in an apprenticeship in their chosen trade area.

Throughout the whole process the Housing Industry Association will be providing mentors to the students involved. The H.I.A. sees this close association with each student as crucial to the program’s success and the successful transition of students from school to an apprenticeship. Clearly, the H.I.A. wants to make sure that students also enter an apprenticeship with much background information and the ability to be successful in an apprenticeship. Thirty students have been selected from well over double that number for the first intake. Three students from Aranmore are among the thirty. This initiative of the Onsite group, led by Mr Paul Baker, has already attracted interest Australia wide and other Housing Industry Associations are hoping to implement the program. I believe that our students are very fortunate to have this program available to them.

SCIENCE WEEK AT ARANMORE

It has been a HUGE week in Science at Aranmore this week. 250 Year Five students from our surrounding primary schools attended ten EXPLOSIVE sessions to learn about ENERGY. There were BANGS, SCREAMS and POPS as the students learnt about solar energy, fuel, mining, motion and static electricity. They mined marble cakes, shook up oil and water and made dry ice rockets. And many had a hair-raising tale to tell. The most hair-raising of all were the explosions at the end by Mr Wilson!

Aranmore Science students demonstrated all the activities and the Year Five students went back to their own schools armed with a lot of knowlege, a showbag and a solar power kit to set up in their own classrooms. Most importantly, science week at Aranmore encouraged the students to have a passion for science; something Aranmore is passionate about!

You can see in the pictures below just some of the activities that made this year's Science Week the most ENERGETIC yet! Thank you to all our Primary School students, teachers and parents for creating such a BANG in 2005!

Thanks also to our MAD scientist Mr Ian Wilson and the Science Department for working your magic once again!

Angelico Exhibition

The annual exhibition of Art from Catholic Secondary School students throughout Western Australia is this year on display at the Lord Forrest Centre in St Georges Terrace, Perth. Once again the exhibition features work of an exceptional standard.

Congratulations to the following Aranmore students whose work was selected for its originality, design and expertise in handling of the chosen media: Maree Fletcher, Madeleine Long, Daniela Miloseska, Michelle Ranieri, Ferron Dearnley and Gemma Vasoli.

Special congratulations must go to two students, Maree Fletcher and Gemma Vasoli whose work was highly commended. Maree's work titled Who Am I? was selected in the Open Division and Gemma's poster Pope John Paul II, a Life of Service in the Special Fra Angelico Award.

Gujo High School Visit

Our Japanese friends from Gujo have been at Aranmore for the past two weeks and leave on Sunday. As you can see they have been very busy, studying hard, visiting the Primary School, learning footy and practising their English. The students have been studying with the Intensive English Centre who have organised many activities for them. They were also hosted by Aranmore families and we thank the families for their hospitality. The visiting students were presented today with a graduation certificate to take home to Japan on Sunday.
