Aranmore’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students had a very special visitor today as part of their studies; Alice the dog! Alice belongs to the school social worker Janette Connor and came to the College so that the ESL students could learn about the importance of dogs in Australian culture. The students had prepared questions for Janette and her husband Graham, to learn more about why they have Alice and what having a dog as a pet involves. They were amazed that Alice, an English Mastiff, weighed more than the College social worker, ate 1kg of food a day and that she went to work with Graham everyday(“Wherever we goes, she goes.”). They also wanted to know her place in the family-she is their ‘princess’; why she was so important to them (“Every time you walk in the door it is like Xmas to her she gets so excited”) and about her health. Janette also talked to them about the place of dogs in Australian society, from working dogs on the farms, to rescue dogs and police dogs, to dogs that can detect health issues and assist people with disabilities. And the whole time that the students asked questions, Alice posed for photographs, shook hands and took it all in her stride. She even showed the class her winter accessories! Learning about Australian culture at all levels is a crucial part of the education for all ESL students. As the ESL coordinator, Tracey Smith, commented, it allows them to learn in a way that is exciting, interactive and very relevant to their everyday life in Perth. And for many of them, it was the first time they had come across a dog of this size. One of the African boys commented “ That’s a lioness!”

Our Dry Continent was the theme of this year’s Science Week celebrations and students from Aranmore Catholic Primary School, St Augustine’s Primary School and Chrysalis Montessori found out why scientist consider Australia to be the oldest continent in the world, geographically speaking; how crystals with different shapes and colours are formed and the impact of salinity on farms, wetland and rivers. Students were also able to see first-hand what lives in their local pond or lake water. And of course, the Aranmore Science Week experience -- under the direction of our Mr Ian Wilson (Head of Science) -- wouldn’t be complete without gigantic bubbles and an EXPLOSIVE finale! Due to this year’s theme and its integral connection to Indigenous Australia, primary students were treated to an opportunity to visit our special ‘desert’ coordinated by our Aboriginal Students and listen to a dreamtime story about how the desert came to be whilst enjoying traditional damper. The pictures below are of just some of the students having an Aranmore BLAST! Aranmore was one of the first schools to invite primary schools to celebrate
all things scientific. Thank you to the hard-working Science Department
who have worked extremely hard for many years to enthral and educate our
primary visitors. Next year, the Community Relations Office will be working
together with the Music Department to offer a new, uniquely Aranmore experience
to primary students.
14 AUGUST 2006
The Aranmore students were given a private introductory lesson in the skills of Aussie Rules. It was incredible to watch as every student put 100 % into handballs, kicking and laughter! The group were invited to watch the Dockers train, view a Dockers video, tour the South Fremantle rooms and get prized autographs from Dockers players. The organisers even put on a sausage sizzle for our students. Each student left the Oval very satisfied, with an Auskick pack in tow. The students will be continuing their Aussie Rules training over the next four weeks, with buses taking them to Fremantle Oval every Monday. We know that we have some AFL stars in the making!
30 MAY 2006 TERM TWO PRIMARY PARENTS MORNING TEA: THE JOURNEY WITH KINGSLEY SULLIVAN
It was an absolute privilege to hear Kingsley and we thank him and his
wife Chrissie for sharing their story. Kingsley finished with a quote
that a number of the participants wanted a copy of. It is written below. The Primary Parents Morning Teas are held once a Term on topics that will inspire and challenge parents as they take the journey towards adolescence with their children. In Term One, Professor Pia Broderick, another Aranmore parent, spoke about building healthy relationships with our children. Everybody who attended the session was inspired to think about the way we communicate with our children and the foundations that we are setting in place for our future relationships during the teenage years. In Term Three Dr Paul Bowen will be discussing how modern society impacts on the wellbeing of our young people and how we can teach our children resilience. This session will be held on Tuesday 8 August 9.30- 10.30 am. In Term Four we will be celebrating time with our children with Nico Moretti from the Urban Provider Cooking School. He will be taking us through creations to share with our children. This session will be held on Tuesday 31 October 9.30-10.30 am. If you are interested in attending one of the sessions please contact Catherine Kolomyjec Community Relations Officer on 9201 5213 or by email. Founders Day is always the highlight of the College calendar and it is 103 years since the original Arranmore was founded. It is also 20 years since the amalgamation of St Mary's College and Christian Brothers College Leederville, forming the Aranmore of today. Founders Day celebrates the vision of the founders of the Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers, a vision still driving the education at Aranmore in 2006. The day started with a wonderful Mass celebrated with a number of the Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers in attendance. The Year Eights also invited their Year Two buddies from Aranmore Catholic Primary School up for the Mass. The day continued with celebrations everywhere with activities run by different from classes and a concert for the whole school. And of course there was the obligatory birthday cake! Well done to everyone involved in a wonderful birthday party.

16 MAY 2006
The whole Year 8 group went down to the Primary School to meet their Year Two buddy for the first time. They had a list of questions to find out a bit more about each other. There was much laughter as the new friends found out hobbies, birthdays and football allegiances. And many of the Year 8s were very excited because they were back on their own primary school 'stomping ground'. The Year 8s will use this English Week activity to compile a storybook for their Year Two buddy which they will present during Book Week next term. If the non-stop chatter was any indication, it looks like these buddies have begun wonderful and long-lasting friendships. We look forward to welcoming the Year 2 buddies to sit with their Year 8 friends for Founders Day Mass 26 May 2006. Thanks to the Year 8 and Year 2 teachers for supporting this activity.
5 May 2006
The food and beverages were enjoyed by all as well as the wonderful raffle. BUt most importantly the memories of Aranmore's 103 years were, as always, precious. The favourite story of the night was of the long trenches through Convent Gardens during World War 2 where air raid drills were conducted. The next Sundowner will be the Friday after Melbourne Cup next year-friday 9 November. To join an email invite list please contact Catherine Kolomyjec Community Relations Officer by email.
5 May 2006 Aranmore students have been very excited to have 14 Thai students and two teachers here on campus for the last two weeks. They have been in Perth for a total of four weeks during which time they have been perfecting their English with Jenny Malcolm, an English teacher from Phoenix English Language Academy, as well as seeing the sights here in Perth. While at Aranmore, the students will have participated in the Lifelink Fun Run/Cross Country, sport classes and some elective classes as well as having a workshop with some of our Indigenous students and conversing with our ESL students in their classes. At our Assembly last week the students performed two beautiful Thai dances and at the end of their performance presented our Principal, Mr Elliott, with some typical Thai gifts. We thank them for their kindness and trust that they will take home with them many lasting memories. We hope to see them again this time next year. Bon voyage! Ms Connie Quattrini

Congratulations to all the girls for turning out to practice every Monday and for playing so well, with enthusiasm and great sportsamnship in each game. Special mention should be of the tow coaches, Fiona and Martika from Yr 11, who did an excellent job coaching the girls, organising the team and umpiring games. Well done to the whole team! Mrs Pam Belben-Team Manager
What an extraordinary and fun-filled evening we had on Friday night. It was the occasion of the Senior Ball and I was delighted with the atmosphere of the evening and the exemplary behaviour of our students. It was a great occasion for staff to enjoy the company of the students and to interact with them in a very different and formal setting. It was delightful to see how well presented all of the students were and most students were able to adjust to the demands of formal ballwear. Another measure of the success of the evening was the crowded dancefloor which students used from the moment they entered the ballroom. I would like to congratulate the Senior Students on making this an enjoyable and special evening for all concerned. Congratulations to the Ball Committee and to Mrs Tara Hill and Mrs Debbie-Jo Marando for all the organisational details they attended to and to Mrs Anna Triscari and Mrs Jean Aitken for decorations and artworks. Thank you to all the staff who contributed in any way and thank you to the many staff who attended the evening and enjoyed it with the students. Jim Elliott
Greetings to all Year 8s and their parents. As the frenetic pace of Term
One begins to ease up for us we can finally sit back and reflect on the
enormous contributions that Year Eights have made to the College since
their arrival. It was inspiring to see the involvement and enthusiasm
of some students at our Open Day – we really appreciate your help
and talents, in particular, the Student Councillors, who greeted parents,
and Bronte Turpin and Monica Gilhooley who shared their musical talents
with the crowd.
It was a cooler day last Wednesday when we conducted our Swimming Carnival for students in Years Ten to Twelve. Once again I was able to commend the students for their enthusiastic attendance and participation. Congratulations to our champion swimmers who we look forward to seeing at early morning training for the next four weeks in preparation for the ACC Interschool Carnival. Mr Jim Elliott

The Year Eleven Transition Day was a great day, devoted to welcoming the Year Eleven students to Upper School. It was full of fun activities including get-to-know you sessions, thinking games and trust exercises. The dancing lessons were a ball and it was the first time most of us had danced like that. We also spent time talking about Upper School subjects and the work we need to put in as we head towards graduation. As you can see everybody really loved the day.

Congratulations to Egan's Elves for their devastating win in the pool. Their win was a great example of when a Form group pulls together and everyybody puts in 100%. Congratulations! Homework Centre commences on 14 February and is available to Year 8 and 9 students on a Tuesday and Wednesday after school. Students are fed afternoon tea and are then able to do their homework with teacher support until 4.30 pm. The Centre is a great way for students to clarify their day's lessons and get extra assistance with their work. Just a reminder that the Year Eight Parent Night is on Wednesday 22 February at 7.00 pm. Mrs Sophia Sabatier
