RECONCILIATION DAY

Every year,the Aranmore Catholic College Aboriginal students invite some of their non-Indigenous school friends to participate in the Reconciliation Day activities held by the Catholic Education Office. This year's event was particularly significant because it marks the 40 year anniversary of the 1967 Referendum which acknowledged Aboriginal people as citizens within their own country and gave them the right to vote. Reconciliation Day each year highlights the importance of acknowledging Australia's sad history in relation to Aboriginal culture and identity and celebrates a future where all Australian people can work together towards peace and reconciliation.

YEAR 12'S AMAZING CREATURES

The Year 12 students were busy at the end of Term One, creating sculptures of a wide array of animals. The results were
extraordinary sculptures, made from recycled materials and were a bright addition to the Aranmore Art studios.

NETBALL SENIOR TOURING SQUAD ANNOUNCED

Aranmore's Senior Netballers were hard at work last week, vying for a position in the Specialist Netball Program's
Senior Squad for the prestigious Senior Tour to Melbourne at the end of Term Two. Only 24 students are able to
go on tour, so the girls worked hard to prove to the coaches that they had learned enough skills to make the cut.
The final squads were announced at the end of the week and are listed below. Congratulations to all the students.

ALICE THE DOG VISITS ESL

Aranmore’s English as a Second Language (ESL) students had a very special visitor today as part of their studies; Alice the dog! Alice belongs to the school social worker Janette Connor and came to the College so that the ESL students could learn about the importance of dogs in Australian culture.

The students had prepared questions for Janette and her husband Graham, to learn more about why they have Alice and what having a dog as a pet involves. They were amazed that Alice, an English Mastiff, weighed more than the College social worker, ate 1kg of food a day and that she went to work with Graham everyday(“Wherever we goes, she goes.”). They also wanted to know her place in the family-she is their ‘princess’; why she was so important to them (“Every time you walk in the door it is like Xmas to her she gets so excited”) and about her health.

Janette also talked to them about the place of dogs in Australian society, from working dogs on the farms, to rescue dogs and police dogs, to dogs that can detect health issues and assist people with disabilities. And the whole time that the students asked questions, Alice posed for photographs, shook hands and took it all in her stride. She even showed the class her winter accessories!

Learning about Australian culture at all levels is a crucial part of the education for all ESL students. As the ESL coordinator, Tracey Smith, commented, it allows them to learn in a way that is exciting, interactive and very relevant to their everyday life in Perth. And for many of them, it was the first time they had come across a dog of this size. One of the African boys commented “ That’s a lioness!”

COLLEGE AWARDS PRESENTATION EVENING

We were very proud of the achievements of all the students who were recognised at our first Awards Presentation Evening last Wednesday night. It was a great occasion to recognise Academic & Community achievements in the presence of members of the wider College community. A beautiful opening to the ceremony was led by Mrs Marie Taylor who welcomed us to the traditional land of the Noongar people.

It was wonderful to introduce the Edmund Rice Award presented to the Most Outstanding all round student at each Year level from Years 8—11. This award covers all areas of College life – Academic, Cultural, Spiritual, Sporting and Service to the College community.

In addition, each student who was nominated for this award, received The Mercy Medal in recognition of all round excellence.

SCIENCE WEEK

Every year, Science Week for our Primary School visitors is filled with laughter and excitement. This year was no different, but the 2006 theme gave our young students a timely reminder of how important it is for every Australian to preserve our most precious resource: water.

Our Dry Continent was the theme of this year’s Science Week celebrations and students from Aranmore Catholic Primary School, St Augustine’s Primary School and Chrysalis Montessori found out why scientist consider Australia to be the oldest continent in the world, geographically speaking; how crystals with different shapes and colours are formed and the impact of salinity on farms, wetland and rivers. Students were also able to see first-hand what lives in their local pond or lake water. And of course, the Aranmore Science Week experience -- under the direction of our Mr Ian Wilson (Head of Science) -- wouldn’t be complete without gigantic bubbles and an EXPLOSIVE finale!

Due to this year’s theme and its integral connection to Indigenous Australia, primary students were treated to an opportunity to visit our special ‘desert’ coordinated by our Aboriginal Students and listen to a dreamtime story about how the desert came to be whilst enjoying traditional damper.

Aranmore was one of the first schools to invite primary schools to celebrate all things scientific. Thank you to the hard-working Science Department who have worked extremely hard for many years to enthral and educate our primary visitors. Next year, the Community Relations Office will be working together with the Music Department to offer a new, uniquely Aranmore experience to primary students.

AFRICANS FOR AUSSIE RULES

What joy as Aranmore's African ESL students joined students from Parkwood, Koondoola and Beaconsfield Primary School for the launch of the innovative Africans for Aussie Rules Football Program. The afternoon was held at Fremantle Oval and was sponsored by NAB Auskick, South Fremantle Football Club, West Australian Football and the Australian Government.

The Aranmore students were given a private introductory lesson in the skills of Aussie Rules. It was incredible to watch as every student put 100 % into handballs, kicking and laughter! The group were invited to watch the Dockers train, view a Dockers video, tour the South Fremantle rooms and get prized autographs from Dockers players. The organisers even put on a sausage sizzle for our students. Each student left the Oval very satisfied, with an Auskick pack in tow.

The students will be continuing their Aussie Rules training over the next four weeks, with buses taking them to Fremantle Oval every Monday. We know that we have some AFL stars in the making!

TERM TWO PRIMARY PARENTS MORNING TEA: THE JOURNEY WITH KINGSLEY SULLIVAN


"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Mark Twain

And so began this term's morning tea speaker, Kingsley Sullivan, as he recounted his remarkable life journey from a farm in New Zealand to running the renowned and local New Norcia Bakeries. Kingsley's journey of the spirit inspired all the primary parents present and there were many questions about how his life story has influenced the way he goes about business and also parenting. His story encouraged every one of us to allow our children to take the journey, enjoy the adventure and to trust in providence- "whatever is meant to be, will be".

It was an absolute privilege to hear Kingsley and we thank him and his wife Chrissie for sharing their story. Kingsley finished with a quote that a number of the participants wanted a copy of. It is written below.

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: That the moment one definitely commits oneself then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never have otherwise occurred. A whole stream of events issue from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents, meeting and material assistance which no man could have dreamed would come his way. Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now!" Johan Wolgang von Goethe

The Primary Parents Morning Teas are held once a Term on topics that will inspire and challenge parents as they take the journey towards adolescence with their children. In Term One, Professor Pia Broderick, another Aranmore parent, spoke about building healthy relationships with our children. Everybody who attended the session was inspired to think about the way we communicate with our children and the foundations that we are setting in place for our future relationships during the teenage years.

In Term Three Dr Paul Bowen will be discussing how modern society impacts on the wellbeing of our young people and how we can teach our children resilience. This session will be held on Tuesday 8 August 9.30- 10.30 am.

In Term Four we will be celebrating time with our children with Nico Moretti from the Urban Provider Cooking School. He will be taking us through creations to share with our children. This session will be held on Tuesday 31 October 9.30-10.30 am.

FOUNDERS DAY 2006

Founders Day is always the highlight of the College calendar and it is 103 years since the original Arranmore was founded. It is also 20 years since the amalgamation of St Mary's College and Christian Brothers College Leederville, forming the Aranmore of today. Founders Day celebrates the vision of the founders of the Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers, a vision still driving the education at Aranmore in 2006.

The day started with a wonderful Mass celebrated with a number of the Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers in attendance. The Year Eights also invited their Year Two buddies from Aranmore Catholic Primary School up for the Mass.

The day continued with celebrations everywhere with activities run by different from classes and a concert for the whole school. And of course there was the obligatory birthday cake!

Well done to everyone involved in a wonderful birthday party.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION 'AWAY'

After months of rehearsals under the watchful eye of Ms Cattapan, this year's College production was performed in front of a very full and equally appreciative audience. The play 'Away' is a contemporary Australian piece and the students relished performing characters that represent a little bit of each of us. As you can see from the images below, the students "owned the stage" and we are proud of the actors, musicians, crew, and teachers who made the two evenings such a success. YEAR EIGHT BUDDY PROGRAM

This week saw the commencement of the much anticipated Buddy Program with Aranmore Catholic Primary School.

The whole Year 8 group went down to the Primary School to meet their Year Two buddy for the first time. They had a list of questions to find out a bit more about each other.

There was much laughter as the new friends found out hobbies, birthdays and football allegiances. And many of the Year 8s were very excited because they were back on their own primary school 'stomping ground'.

The Year 8s will use this English Week activity to compile a storybook for their Year Two buddy which they will present during Book Week next term.

If the non-stop chatter was any indication, it looks like these buddies have begun wonderful and long-lasting friendships. We look forward to welcoming the Year 2 buddies to sit with their Year 8 friends for Founders Day Mass 26 May 2006.

FRIENDS OF ARANMORE SUNDOWNER

The occasional splash of rain did not deter the Friends who gathered for the annual Friends Sundowner. Representing St Mary's, CBC and Aranmore students, they had a great time catching up with old friends. And thanks to past staff member Gemma Contos, a large number of former staff members came to meet their colleagues and former pupils.

The food and beverages were enjoyed by all as well as the wonderful raffle. BUt most importantly the memories of Aranmore's 103 years were, as always, precious. The favourite story of the night was of the long trenches through Convent Gardens during World War 2 where air raid drills were conducted.

ARANMORE'S WONDERFUL THAI VISITORS

Aranmore students have been very excited to have 14 Thai students and two teachers here on campus for the last two weeks. They have been in Perth for a total of four weeks during which time they have been perfecting their English with Jenny Malcolm, an English teacher from Phoenix English Language Academy, as well as seeing the sights here in Perth.

While at Aranmore, the students will have participated in the Lifelink Fun Run/Cross Country, sport classes and some elective classes as well as having a workshop with some of our Indigenous students and conversing with our ESL students in their classes. At our Assembly last week the students performed two beautiful Thai dances and at the end of their performance presented our Principal, Mr Elliott, with some typical Thai gifts. We thank them for their kindness and trust that they will take home with them many lasting memories. We hope to see them again this time next year. Bon voyage!

YEAR 9 GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Year 9 girls had a fantastic season in Term 1, easily winning all of their games. The finals saw them up against John Septimus Roe and the girls played exceptionally well as a team, winning 95-22. Every one of the players scored points for the team.

Congratulations to all the girls for turning out to practice every Monday and for playing so well, with enthusiasm and great sportsamnship in each game.

Special mention should be of the tow coaches, Fiona and Martika from Yr 11, who did an excellent job coaching the girls, organising the team and umpiring games.

Well done to the whole team!

SENIORS BALL

What an extraordinary and fun-filled evening we had on Friday night. It was the occasion of the Senior Ball and I was delighted with the atmosphere of the evening and the exemplary behaviour of our students. It was a great occasion for staff to enjoy the company of the students and to interact with them in a very different and formal setting. It was delightful to see how well presented all of the students were and most students were able to adjust to the demands of formal ballwear. Another measure of the success of the evening was the crowded dancefloor which students used from the moment they entered the ballroom.

I would like to congratulate the Senior Students on making this an enjoyable and special evening for all concerned. Congratulations to the Ball Committee and to Mrs Tara Hill and Mrs Debbie-Jo Marando for all the organisational details they attended to and to Mrs Anna Triscari and Mrs Jean Aitken for decorations and artworks. Thank you to all the staff who contributed in any way and thank you to the many staff who attended the evening and enjoyed it with the students.

YEAR EIGHT NEWS

Greetings to all Year 8s and their parents. As the frenetic pace of Term One begins to ease up for us we can finally sit back and reflect on the enormous contributions that Year Eights have made to the College since their arrival. It was inspiring to see the involvement and enthusiasm of some students at our Open Day – we really appreciate your help and talents, in particular, the Student Councillors, who greeted parents, and Bronte Turpin and Monica Gilhooley who shared their musical talents with the crowd.
Over the weekend, two of our Year Eights were involved in the State Athletics competition at Perry Lakes. Both Georgia Braund and Kate King managed some impressive results and it is a credit to them that they manage such a demanding training and performance schedule and still ensure that their academic pursuits are not compromised. Well done to both girls on their efforts.
We also have a number of dedicated swimmers representing us this Wednesday at our Interschool Athletics. To be at training at 7.15am is no mean feat at this stage of the year and I thank those who have made an effort and put themselves out there for us at this important occasion. Year Eights have also been cheerleading – inspired by the Year Nines, and the results of this practice will again be evident on Wednesday.
Finally, I would like to congratulate those students who have been elected for positions of responsibility at the College.

UPPER SCHOOL SWIMMING CARNIVAL

It was a cooler day last Wednesday when we conducted our Swimming Carnival for students in Years Ten to Twelve. Once again I was able to commend the students for their enthusiastic attendance and participation. Congratulations to our champion swimmers who we look forward to seeing at early morning training for the next four weeks in preparation for the ACC Interschool Carnival.

ARANMORE'S PRIMARY PARENTS MORNING TEAS 2006

Aranmore is proud to announce its first series of morning teas specifically for primary school parents; aimed at dealing with some of the issues and fears that primary parents have raised with us with their children moving toward the teenage years. In what we hope will be an ongoing programme we are planning to take a journey with you; to help you pack your kitbag so that you are prepared for life with your teenager. Every parent needs resilience, adaptability and good health and we hope that this series will provide some ideas, shared wisdom and social contact for every parent. Each session will be run by a parent of the Aranmore community and we are very excited that they have been willing to share their expertise.

TERM ONE: Preparing for the adventure with Assoc. Professor Pia Broderick

As our children grow up, many of us wonder what it will be like to be a parent of a teenager, and how to deal with the many issues that may confront us. This session will focus on preparing for the journey into the teen years; about looking after yourself and building a healthy relationship with your child. A healthy family now just may prevent issues later on or give your family the skills to deal with any challenges along the way.

Pia Broderick is Associate Professor of Psychology at Murdoch University where she specialises in teaching and research on optimal development for children, adolescents, adults and families. She is also a practicing Clinical Psychologist and works mostly with children and families to deal with a variety of difficult issues confronting them, and to create the best environments for healthy development of individuals and families. She has continuing personal experience of parenting children developing into adolescents, with her children aged 13 and 11 years attending Aranmore College and Primary School.

ABORIGINAL STUDENTS PERFORM AT THE OPENING OF THE PERTH INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL.

 

What an extraordinary night watching 31 Aranmore students performing in the opening of this year's Perth International Arts Festival. This year's festival celebrates the Nyoongar culture and opened with a Festival Overture in Kings Park, entitled 'Welcome to the Country'. The performance began with welcomes from the Noongar women and men followed by the Aranmore students, part of a group of 80 local students who have been busy rehearsing with Rhonda Roberts, the Director of the Indigeneous content of the Sydeny Olympics Opening Ceremony. The students were part of several dances with the Sydney Garrabarra Dance Company. The students also danced to celebrate the launch of a canvas that celebrates the Noongar people; a work that has taken five years to complete.

 

 

Aranmore students, represented not only the Noongar people at the celebration, but also Yamatji, Pilbara, Kimberley and Wongi. We are very proud of their commitment, talent and pride-representing both Aboriginal culture and Aranmore Catholic College. Thanks to Aranmore's Aboriginal Program, led by Denise Conway and Margaret Papertalk, and to the Perth International Arts Festival for inviting our students to be involved in this wonderful evening.

YEAR ELEVEN TRANSITION DAY

The Year Eleven Transition Day was a great day, devoted to welcoming the Year Eleven students to Upper School. It was full of fun activities including get-to-know you sessions, thinking games and trust exercises. The dancing lessons were a ball and it was the first time most of us had danced like that. We also spent time talking about Upper School subjects and the work we need to put in as we head towards graduation. As you can see everybody really loved the day.

THE YEAR EIGHT STUDENTS START WITH A SPLASH!

The year Eight group of 2006 have started the Year in earnest and their behaviour has been exceptional. The group began with a two day Orientation program where they learned about high school, met their Year 11 buddies and made lots of new friends. By the end of the two days, shy faces had made way to confidence, laughter and excitement at the year ahead. The students' enthusiasm, both in the classroom and also at the Swimming Carnival on Friday night has been very pleasing.

Congratulations to Egan's Elves for their devastating win in the pool. Their win was a great example of when a Form group pulls together and everyybody puts in 100%. Congratulations!

Homework Centre commences on 14 February and is available to Year 8 and 9 students on a Tuesday and Wednesday after school. Students are fed afternoon tea and are then able to do their homework with teacher support until 4.30 pm. The Centre is a great way for students to clarify their day's lessons and get extra assistance with their work.

Just a reminder that the Year Eight Parent Night is on Wednesday 22 February at 7.00 pm.
