Human Biology Trip to Zoo

As part of the 11 Human Biology programme, all Year Eleven Human Biology students visited the Perth Zoo on Monday 14 February. Students were required to observe all the primates at the Perth Zoo and record their observations in their work-book. Despite it being a very hot and humid day students worked enthusiastically all day, completing their tasks successfully. The students found some relief when they attended a primates lecture in an air-conditioned theatre. The presenter was quite impressed with the numerous and varied responses from the Aranmore students.

Italy Trip

After months of saving and fundraising three Italian students, Bianca, Sam and Louisa, accompanied by Ms Quattrini, set off on the VIVA Italy 2005 tour. They ate lots of pizza and pasta, found great bargains at the markets and had the opportunity to speak a lot of Italian. The three students have each written a bit about their amazing experience below.

Our first destination was Venice where we had lots of fantastic experiences including Burano Island which is famous for its lace and its colourful houses. We also spent an afternoon in Verona and visited Juliet's Balcony which is where Romeo and Juliet's love story was set.

By the end of three days we had seen many of Venezia's sights, including the Rialto Bridge, which has many shops and beautiful views and San Marco's Basilica, which is filled with a lot of intricate mosaics. We visited the Bridge of Sighs which was known as the last walk for convicts on death row, and Piazza di San Marco which is huge. It has shops, a large belltower and is unfortunately famous for its many, many, MANY pigeons. Our hotel, Hotel Lux, was fantastic. The rooms were small but it had a great atmosphere.

Bianca

After our stay in Venice. we caught the famous Eurostar train to Poggibonsi Station in Tuscany to start our two week homestays. We stayed with the Italian students who had stayed with us in 2003. On the first day, we went to school (might I add that it was on a Saturday!). The school was in a small town called Colle di Val Delsa and it specialises in languages, fashion and automotive studies. After going home for lunch we went out for pizza in Poggibonsi. The next day Bianca went to a soccer match with her host sister and Sam and I learnt table soccer Italian style.

On the Monday we took a 1 1/2 hour train trip to Pisa and saw the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. After eating our HUGE packed lunches on the steps of the cathedral, we visited the baptistry, cathedral and museum. The next day we went to Florence and did lots of shopping in the San Lorenzo markets and the millions of other stores lining the busy main streets of town.

On Wednesday we went to Siena to see the Piazza del Campo which is famous for the annual Palio horse race, attracting thousands of tourists each year. After having a pizza in a restaurant right in the piazza, we went to see a few churches before catching our bus back to Colle Val Delsa. We returned to Florence the next day to go to the Uffizi Gallery where we saw works by many famous artists including Botticelli and Da Vinci. We also had enough time for more shopping, this time for designer sunnies! And on the Friday we went to San Gimignano, a small town that dates back to medieval times and is complete with stone towers. There we visited yet another beautiful cathedral.

Louisa

We started our second week in Tuscany with a day at school (San Giovanni Bosco). The school system is totally different to the Australian school system so it was a great new experience. We attended four English classes and talked about Aranmore and Australian schooling in general. We also went to the pool with the class because they go swimming every second week.

On Monday night we went to Florence and saw The Phantom of the Opera. It was a great experience but Italians speak so fast that it was hard to understand.

Tuesday was our last visit to Florence so we went to the Accademia and saw the statue of David. We also climbed the Coppola (church dome) and saw the whole of Florence. Wednesday was back to the Siena Markets where we bumped into a familiar Aranmore face, Miss Connor. On Thursday we said goodbye to our Principal and on Friday morning we had the challenging task of saying goodbye to our host families who we had all become very close to.

We finished the adventure with four days in Rome including a one day trip to Pompeii. Rome is so full of things to see and we managed to squeeze in the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, Piazza Novona, the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican, the Colosseum and lots of things that we just 'chanced' upon.

Thankyou to Ms Quattrini, our Italian hosts, Aranmore and our families for helping to make this excellent trip come true. We recommend it to all LOTE students!

Sam

Student Council Leadership Day

The 2005 Student Representative Council began with a Leadership Day held in the Parish Centre. The day was designed to further enhance leadership skills and to develop friendships between the Councillors. During the day the Council's ability to work as a supportive team became evident. It was an informative day for all of the Councillors who learned about things as diverse as meeting procedures, effective communication and about each other.

The Student Council was then fortunate to take part in the Year 8 Orientation and the New Student Orientation where they helped the teachers with activities, took students on tours of the school and organised the sausage sizzle during lunch.

In the afternoon session the Council was divided into five sub-committee groups including the Service Committee, the Social Committee, the Environment Committee, Uniform Committee and the Promotion Committee. Each committee worked diligently and enthusiastically to create a better atmosphere for our great College. Thank you to each and every Student Councillor for their time and effort this year and for providing some fantastic suggestions for making our College a better place for all.
