URGENT & IMPORTANT NEWSFLASH!
for Year 11 Students and those Year 12's who have shown an interest.

Are you interested in Children’s Services? That is working as a child care provider, managing or owning a Child Care Centre, possibly becoming an Early Childhood Teacher – then this Meerilinga and Aranmore partnership could be for you.

BUT
• You need to be brave to have a go!
• Committed to 18 months study
• Able to cope with learning in a variety of workplaces (school, Meerilinga and work placements)
• YES! TEE and NON-TEE students will be considered
• YES! This extra course counts as subject equivalents towards Graduation
• YES! You get a reduced school load to cover the extra time at Meerilinga
• AND there is too much more to tell you here!

Aranmore is about to start a new course for Year 11 & 12 students who will complete Secondary Graduation, Certificate 3 in Children’s Services and complete several work experience placements.

If you would like to find out more please come to our information session on Tuesday 10 May in Room 12.4 at Pastoral Period and bring your lunch. Jan Spence and Mrs. Middleton will tell you all.

AND REMEMBER!! to let your parents know that we will have a morning coffee parent information session on Tuesday 17 May in the Memorabilia Room at 8.30am. Jan Spence will address the Meerilinga component of the program, Mrs. Middleton will show how this fits into the academic program and Sonya Bogunovich from Notre Dame will show how this career pathway can be used to become a teacher. A note will follow to invite your parents after the student session.

AN UPDATE FROM MRS MIDDLETON & OF INTEREST TO ALL
• Defence Force Recruiting has sent new information regarding careers they have. The package plus large poster with careers pathways will be in the library but there are some student packs on the display stand outside room 12.4

• Curtin University has sent some Prospective Student Services handouts specifically for Mature Age Entry students. Remember if you are 20 years old by the 1 March in the year you start or plan to start university, you do qualify as a mature age student. This means you could qualify for a reduced TEE subject load while you are at school In other words, depending on the course and campus you wish to study at, you could have your TER calculated for 2 or 3 TEE subjects only and you may also be able to use the STAT test to cover you literacy requirements. See Mrs Middleton for more information.

• Swan TAFE, Balga Campus, has a fantastic course for young ladies ready to leave school. It is 20 weeks long and very relevant to getting into TAFE courses or making you more ready for the workplace. Starts July 18. Poster and handouts at Mrs Middleton’s office near 12.3. (This is particularly relevant to older students, students ready to leave school and maybe some IEC students.)

• Industry areas desperately looking for people to enter the workforce and complete training are the painters and plasterers (See me for info) and the construction industry. Please add these to your career considerations.

• UMAT 2005 – Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test information poster on notice board near 12.4.

• Year 11 - ONSITE semester 2 placement applications are now available. You must complete the application and find your own placement. Details of your confirmed, suitable placement are to be enclosed with you application.

Placement dates: 8 June – 14 September
Interview date: 18 May in the Memorablia Room

If you wish to start earlier that this please let Mrs Middleton know as she will be commencing a school based program for limited numbers of participants. This is also a Curriculum Council Subject and will count towards your Year 11 report. It will also be considered as part of your graduation requirements.

• Year 11 Childrens Services Certificate 3 course will be commencing in the second half of this term for students who wish to complete this qualification over 2 years and be considered a qualified child care worker when they finish school. Your will also be eligible for the Diploma course and you could use this to enter Early Childhood Education at some point in the future. You can be a current TEE or non TEE student.

Student information session will be next Tuesday at Pastoral Period in room 12.4 and the following Tuesday morning a coffee meeting for parents. An invitation will soon be available.

• Murdoch University “Be a Law student for a Day” is on Sunday 15 May 2005 form 9.00a. – 12.15 pm. This program is designed to give interested students the experience of studying law. You will need to register your interest early to avoid disappointment. The poster is on the notice board outside room 12.4

• WA Horticulture and Environmental Science Skills Centre is having their Next Big TAFE Checkout days on 13-14 July and 4 – 5 October. These programs give students the opportunity to ‘taste’ a variety of TAFE courses at the Challenger TAFE Murdoch and Peel Campuses. Further details are available outside Mrs. Middleton’s Office. Areas covered wool technology, animal studies, irrigation/horticulture, parks and gardens and environmental courses to name a few.

• Challenger TAFE Marine Industry Open Day is 7 May 2005. This is for students interested in the shipbuilding industry which encompasses a wide range of design, fabrication and installation skills. More information is on Mrs. Middleton’s notice board.

• Year 11 2005 students interested in Nursing Careers should consider applying for the Transition to Registered Nursing Program. This course provides specialist training for students who wish to enter the

• Western Australian Aviation college is holding another FREE career Information Seminar where students can find out a out being a pilot.
19 May 7 – 9 pm at the Hyatt Hotel Perth. Bookings essential. Notice on Mrs Middleton’s Board.

• Year 10 Work Experience Applications are due to the front office by 18 May. No late applications accepted.

All information regarding post school options, university and TAFE handbooks and brochures and letters of interest to Year 10 ,11 and 12 students is on display for you in the hallway to room 12.4 and on the notice boards in this hallway and outside my office.

I will keep you informed of any new information or relevant details of activities and/or dates of interest, but you must make the effort to regularly visit this display.

OF INTEREST TO ALL
• The National Careers and Employment Expo will be held and the Claremont Show Grounds on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April. Entry is free. More on my Notice Board.

• On Sunday 1 May 2005 ECU Joondalup Campus will host its Open Day. There will be career talks, university information sessions, interactive displays, hands – on experiments, information on entry pathways, choosing subjects in Year 10, preferences selections for Year 12, live entertainment, market stalls, kids activities games and giveaways. See notice board for poster and some hand outs in the information racks near 12.4.

• Are you interested in being a Contructiuon Economist, a Project Cost Manager, a Construction Cost Consultant or a Quantity Surveyor? The Institute of Quanity Surveyors’ Tertiary Course Guide’ is now available in the Year 12 hallway for those interested in pursuing this career area. Also included is information of cadetships available in this field and very generous scholarships for Year 12 students interested in further study.

Applications are quite extensive but acceptance is a real achievement. Forms are available from Mrs Middleton.

 

Year 12 students

• I have made some copies of the 2004 Tertiary Entrance Score requirements to all the courses at all institutions – these are available in the hall way outside 12.4
