At Aranmore, the Home Economics Department is always busy, offering a range of courses in a variety of disciplines for students from Years 8 to 12. The main focus for Year Eights is on food preparation skills. The students prepare a variety of dishes that follow the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, as well as the diet pyramid. The healthy cooking skills taught in these early years will give them good grounding as adults. The courses offered in Years Nine and Ten allow students to expand their skills and develop a great collection of recipes that will stand them in good stead for the future. Year Nines are required to plan and prepare their own nutritious menus; a task which enables students to develop organisational skills. Year Tens learn everything related to table setting and meal service for meals ranging from buffet to formal and informal dining. They also study international foods, including the culture, agriculture, religion and cuisine of a particular country. Years Eleven and Twelve Independent Living classes plan nutritious meals that are quick and easy to prepare, as well as learn valuable skills for employment, management for the future, accomodation, legal aspects of independent living, purchasing a car, budgeting and how to operate a business venture. |
